I remember reading a novel (? it might have been a history ?) some years ago about pre-revolutionary Russia and how young girls were taught lace making, and after a few years of working in poor light, usually went blind. Also sailors used to tat and work knots for netting for work, and netting for decoration.

I'm impressed by the skill and dexterity of lacemakers. I learned to tat decades ago, but it was so slow I soon abandoned it and went back to my crochet hook. :-)
